Rig Revive - Do's & Dont's & What to Expect
1. What CAN Rig Revive do? Rig Revive is designed to rejuvenate faded, dull and weathered powder coat where the original coating is still intact. It can restore depth of colour and improve the overall appearance while adding ongoing protection.
2. What CAN’T Rig Revive repair? Rig Revive cannot repair physical damage to the powder coating itself. This includes deep scratches, chips, peeling, flaking, blistering, corrosion or areas where the coating has worn through or is missing. It rejuvenates and protects the existing coating. It does not replace or rebuild it.
3. How long does Rig Revive last? Rig Revive can provide up to 12 months of protection, depending on the surface, preparation, application and environmental exposure. Surfaces exposed to harsh UV, coastal conditions, frequent washing or regular off-road use may require more frequent reapplication. For the best longevity, always start with a thoroughly cleaned, properly prepared and completely dry surface, and maintain it with a pH-neutral wash such as Rig Wash.
4. DO check the condition of your powder coat before applying Your powder coat needs to have sufficient surface integrity for Rig Revive to perform as intended. If the surface is peeling, flaking, blistering, heavily corroded or the coating has worn away, Rig Revive should not be applied as a substitute for repair or recoating.
5. DO thoroughly clean and dry the surface first Always clean the surface with a pH-neutral wash, such as Rig Wash, before application. Dirt, grime, oils and other contaminants can affect the final result and product performance. The surface must be completely dry before applying Rig Revive.
6. DON’T apply Rig Revive over chalky or oxidised residue If your powder coat leaves a white or coloured powdery residue on your hand or cloth when rubbed, this needs to be thoroughly removed before applying Rig Revive. Applying over loose oxidation can prevent Rig Revive from properly bonding to the surface.
7. DON’T apply in direct sunlight or to a hot surface Always apply Rig Revive in a shaded, well-ventilated area and ensure the surface is cool to the touch before application. Direct sunlight or excessive surface heat can cause the product to dry too quickly and affect the final finish.
8. DON’T force the drying process Allow Rig Revive to dry and cure naturally. Do not use heat guns, hair dryers, fans or other methods to speed up the drying process, as forced drying may affect how the coating settles, bonds and performs.
9. DON’T apply if you’re unsure – ask us first Every surface ages differently. If you're unsure about the condition of your powder coat or whether Rig Revive is suitable, send us a few clear photos before applying. We'd much rather help you assess the surface first than have you apply the product to the wrong surface.
1. Does Rig Renew contain silicone? No. Rig Renew along with all our products are completely silicone-free. It is a water-based formula designed to rejuvenate and protect vinyl, rubber, leather and select plastics without relying on silicone-based dressings. This means you get a clean, natural-looking finish without the greasy or overly glossy residue commonly associated with traditional silicone-based products.
2. What surfaces can I use Rig Renew on? Rig Renew is designed to rejuvenate and protect vinyl, rubber, leather and select plastic surfaces. It can be used across a range of interior and exterior components on 4WDs, caravans, cars, trailers and recreational equipment. If you’re unsure about a particular surface, we recommend testing a small, inconspicuous area first or getting in touch with us before applying.
3. Why doesn’t Rig Renew work on all plastics? No products work on all plastics because not all plastics are made the same. Some plastics are more receptive to a rejuvenating product, while others are manufactured to be highly resistant and non-porous.
Think of a plastic container - it's specifically designed so liquids and oils don't soak into it. Some automotive plastics behave in a similar way. Their surface is so dense and non-porous that Rig Renew has nothing to absorb into or properly interact with, so the product may simply sit on the surface rather than producing the intended result. That’s why we say Rig Renew is suitable for select plastics.
4. Will Rig Renew leave a greasy or oily finish? No. Rig Renew is water-based and silicone-free and is designed to leave a clean, conditioned finish rather than the greasy or excessively shiny appearance associated with some traditional dressings. As with all Revival products, less is more - apply a thin, even layer and avoid over-application.
5. How long does Rig Renew last? Rig Renew can provide protection for approximately 3–6 months, depending on the surface, application, use and environmental exposure. Exterior surfaces exposed to UV, weather, regular washing and off-road conditions may require more frequent reapplication than protected interior surfaces.
Is My Surface Suitable?
1. Check the surface Look closely at your powder coat in good lighting. Fading, dullness and general weathering are okay, but take note of any existing scratches, marks, staining, uneven areas or other imperfections. Rig Revive does not hide imperfections and, by restoring depth and colour to the surface, may make existing imperfections more noticeable.
2. Check for physical damage Look for peeling, flaking, blistering, deep chips, corrosion or areas where the powder coat has worn away. Rig Revive is designed to rejuvenate and protect the existing coating -Â it cannot repair powder coat that has physically failed or been damaged.
3. Do the rub test Rub your hand or a clean cloth firmly over the surface. If a white or coloured powdery residue comes away, your powder coat is oxidised. This doesn't necessarily mean Rig Revive can't be used, but the oxidation must be thoroughly removed and the surface properly prepared before application.
4. Test before you commit Always test Rig Revive on a small, inconspicuous and clean area first. This allows you to see how your particular powder coat responds and, importantly, how any existing imperfections may appear once the colour and depth of the surface are restored.
Remember:Â Rig Revive rejuvenates and protects the powder coat you already have - it does not fill, conceal or repair existing imperfections.
